Prospect Road, home to many great cafes, restaurants and small businesses, has long needed a “venue of significance”. That dream comes to fruition this Thursday when Palace Nova open their second, Adelaide cinema complex.
Glam Adelaide were lucky enough to be offered a pre-opening peek at this beautiful building, developed in partnership with the Maras Group.
In keeping with the mid-century aesthetic for which Prospect is renowned, Palace Prospect harks back to the golden era of the Art Deco cinema. With a glorious façade, including stained-glass windows by Matthew Stuckey and a pressed tin verandah roof, it looks as though it has been a part of the street-scape for decades.
As a delightful homage to Prospect history, the side of the building features the old signage from A. S. Horne, the glove factory which stood on the site for nearly 80 years. There is also a mural made from old glove moulds and a display in the ground-floor foyer.
Featuring 14 screens, the complex comprises eight boutique cinemas and six larger cinemas, including a sharply raked theatre perfect for a Q & A or occasion where there might be a presentation.
The first-floor main foyer has been designed around several, cosy seating areas, allowing for an intimate feel. These areas are also perfect for private functions. Second floor houses the larger cinemas, and another bar. This area can also be hired out for private functions.
Business Development Manager Jade Henschke is excited about the films on offer at the Prospect venue.
“Of course we will still have all the art-house films that are showing at the EastEnd cinema, as well as screenings from film festivals. But we will be showing more children’s films here, as we are surrounded by schools. This cinema allows us to offer a slightly different program.”
In light of this focus on children, the cinema is hosting 3000 students from local schools, at free screenings, over the first week of opening. Also on offer for the first week are $5 tickets for all screenings. The doors to this exciting venture open this Thursday 7th December, with a gala night set for December 12th, where the complex will be officially opened by The Premier, Jay Weatherill.
