The latest edition to the Barossa food and wine scene is Otherness, a boutique wine bar and cellar door opening in Angaston.
Spearheaded by local restauranteur Grant Dickson, Otherness is a celebration of the “unlikely connections and close relationships” that have developed over the years between the restauranteur and local South Australian winemakers.
Grant Dickson is one of the faces behind fermentAsian, which brings Southeast Asian cuisine to the Barossa region. The restaurant has been a huge hit with the local community, especially those who appreciate Grant’s eclectic wine choices.
The wine list at fermentAsian was named the Best Country List and Best SA List for two years running and won Australia’s Wine List of the Year in its first year as a finalist.
What was once just a series of winemaking collaborations has evolved into wine bar, cellar door, and food destination, now that Chef Sam Smith (previously from Fino Seppeltsfield) has also joined the team.
Located on the main street of Angaston, take a seat, people-watch, and sip on some of the local winemakers’ favourite selections. Perhaps a Chablis, a Beaujolais, a German Riesling, or something local? Take this opportunity to pick Grant’s brain, who is very happy to share some of his extensive wine knowledge.
If you have the time, definitely book into one of Grant’s Riesling Masterclasses, and discover why international wine journalist Stuart Pigott titled his 2014 book “The Riesling Story – Best Wine on Earth”.
Lunch is available now from Thursday to Monday, featuring a masterfully curated menu by Sam Smith. Described as “simple, tasty and sophisticated”, Otherness appears to be the perfect relaxed atmosphere to enjoy good food, great wine, and a wonderful community.
From 10 February, Otherness will also be kicking off a stellar dinner menu, available from Thursday to Saturday.
