First look: Soi 38 opens on Pirie Street

The popular Thai street food eatery has opened the doors to its Pirie Street venue with a fresh fit out and updated menu.

One of Adelaide’s favourite Thai restaurants, Soi 38, is relocating!

The popular eatery has opened the doors to its Pirie Street venue with a fresh fit out and updated menu. Formerly on Pulteney Street, which will now house their festival pop-up Fire x Soi 38, Soi 38 is well-known for their modern Thai food dishes and street food delights.

While the menu is similar to that of its much-loved predecessor, Soi 38’s new menu is a slightly “elevated” version, made in a new kitchen and drawing inspiration from Executive Chef Terry Intarakhamhaeng’s background. Now king of the kitchen at Pirie’s newest Thai restaurant, Terry has formerly been a tour guide in Thailand, a scientist, and a Buddhist monk. His breadth of knowledge allowed the eatery to expand beyond their original concept of solely street food, serving up the likes of wild buffalo tartare, Paeneng kangaroo tail curry, and red duck with lychee and pineapple.

The new menu also has classics such as spring rolls and chive cakes, as well as stir fries, curries, and flavourful salads.

Terry’s background also bleeds into the interior design; The high ceiling of the new Pirie Street location has multiple prayer flags, a setup you’d find at Buddhist temples. Co-owner Daisy Miller says the brand-new fit out now more accurately represents the dishes Terry and the Soi 38 crew create.

“Our new location is a more refined version of what we were doing before; We are elevating the space to match the food,” Miller says.

“The fit out is more elegant and soft, giving space for the Thai food––which is bright, colourful, and flavourful with so much going on––to have room to stand out.”

Soi 38 has received rave reviews during their six years at their Pulteney Street premise, including but not limited to Winner of Best Thai Restaurant at the National Savour Awards for Excellence 2019, winning 8th best restaurant in South Australia in the Delicious100, and being awarded Best Southeast Asian restaurant in Adelaide by the Advertiser Good Food Guide. With a new space and updated menu, the new and improved Soi 38 is sure to keep on winning.
