NOW OPEN: The popular Miss Mai returns to Pirie Street with Vietnamese condensed milk coffee and Banh Mi

Warren and Kim Jones open bigger and better Vietnamese eatery on Pirie Street, and draw eager crowds within minutes.

At 11am on the first day of summer, Miss Mai Vietnamese eatery swung open its doors. By 11:20am, the lines were already forming, and the excitement was palpable.

“This has been a long time coming,” said owner Warren Jones, who runs Miss Mai with his chef wife, Kim. “We’re very excited.”

The couple recently closed down their popular shop in Gawler Place, after deciding to move to a bigger and better location. Previously operating two stores at the same time – one in Gawler Place and one in Pirie Street – Warren and Kim decided to close the two smaller stores and consolidate into one larger space in Pirie Street.

“We like the location,” says Warren. Gone are the days of begrudgingly transporting goods from one shop to the other, as Warren explains that they now have a spacious outdoor seating area as well as a larger interior, and can enjoy the convenience of only having one shop.

Serving delicious banh mi and rice packs from 11am to 3pm, Monday through Friday, the dynamic duo are catering to the busy lunch crowd and appealing to the many office workers surrounding the eatery. They also anticipate patronage from their loyal foodie followers, who have been known to eagerly line the streets for a feed at Miss Mai’s previous locations.

On December 1st, the bread buns were all sliced, and the fridges were stocked full of salads, with Warren at the helm, serving free coffee and baked goods for hungry patrons.

What can you expect from Miss Mai? The same amazing menu and service, but with the addition of Vietnamese coffee.

“It’s made with condensed milk, so it’s a lot sweeter than regular coffee,” Warren explains. “The robusta beans were grown in Vietnam, and a lot of countries don’t grow that variety. It’s very smooth, and has twice the caffeine of regular coffee. It’ll certainly wake you up!”

With their blush-pink walls, sleek counter spaces and carefully-placed greenery, the new space is open and welcoming. The menu is simple but full of flavour.

“My wife grew up in Vietnam and designed the menu,” he says, explaining that the recipes all celebrate traditional Vietnamese foods and flavours.

Any recommendations from owner Warren? “The pork banh mi is very popular,” he says, “but I also suggest the lemongrass chicken.”
