FIRST LOOK: The Wharf Wine Bar reopens after renos with a fresh look and familiar charm

In the heart of Goolwa, The Wharf Wine Bar has had an elevated refresh that’s all about flexibility, functionality, and keeping things local.

In the heart of Goolwa, the Wharf Wine Bar has had an elevated refresh, but its relaxed, local feel hasn’t gone anywhere.

Housed in the historic Signal Point building, the bar has long been a go-to for locals and visitors looking for a laid-back drink, some live music, and a bit of banter.

The story behind it begins in 2009, when family-run label 90 Mile Wines set up shop in Middleton, crafting estate-grown varietals from Padthaway and McLaren Vale that quickly earned a loyal following.

In 2014, the opportunity came to relocate to the iconic Goolwa Wharf precinct, breathing new life into the space and transforming the business into what became known as the Wharf Barrel Shed.

Now, the bar has evolved again. This time, with a new name – The Wharf Wine Bar – and a design overhaul that’s all about flexibility, functionality, and keeping things local.

“We’ve updated all the flooring, brought in new furniture and tried to give the place a more refined feel, less casual bench seating and more modern, function-ready pieces,” co-owner Chris Ramsey says.

“We want people to walk in and think, ‘this would be a great place to have an event,’ but also still feel comfortable coming in for a casual lunch or dinner.”

What was once a rustic, eclectic space has been reimagined with a neutral palette of black, grey and white, designed to act as a canvas for the ever-changing art exhibitions and events the space hosts.

“There’s a bit of an art gallery vibe now,” he says.

“We’re right next to the South Coast Regional Art Gallery, so it felt natural to lean into that connection. We’ve even created a dedicated space for exhibitions, and our first big one is coming up in August, it’s full of bold colour that plays off the more muted tones of the venue.”

The transformation also opens the door to more evening trade and group bookings. Sitting on the wharf overlooking the pristine waters, the neutral space is the perfect backdrop for events and evenings out.

“Goolwa can go a bit quiet after dark, so we’re trying to give people a reason to come out, whether it’s for a cocktail, a glass of wine, some live music or just a good atmosphere.”

In keeping with its roots, the wine list continues to champion 90 Mile Wines alongside small-batch South Australian producers. The bar has also expanded its craft offering, with four beers now on tap through a new partnership with Shapeshifter Brewing Co.

“We’ve added a few new things, but everything still comes back to supporting local,” adds Chris. “It’s not about changing who we are. It’s just about giving the space a lift.”

The food menu remains simple and locally focused, built to pair perfectly with the drinks. Live music continues every Sunday from 2pm to 5pm, and community favourites like Trivia and Wine Bar Bingo aren’t going anywhere.

“We’re in a regional town, and our locals are our bread and butter,” says Chris.

“We’re not trying to be something we’re not. We just want to create a space that people love coming back to, whether it’s for a party or just a glass of wine by the water.”

With its new look and renewed energy, The Wharf Wine Bar is ready to welcome guests old and new. Same soul, just a little more polished.
