In the heart of Hahndorf, a charming village known for its rich heritage and picturesque landscapes, something new that exists outside of the area’s traditional mould pops up. Ernest Delicatessen, founded by the accomplished Executive Chef James, is hero-ing Adelaide’s love for fresh pasta and delicious sandos.
James, whose culinary journey spans over 29 years, boasts an impressive array of accolades, including the “Best Italian Restaurant in Australia” award for his work at Auge Ristorante in Adelaide and a coveted two Chef Hat rating from the Australia Good Food Guide for the Lane Vineyard. However, his latest project brings him closer to his roots and the vision he’s always wanted to bring to life.

“I’ve lived in Hahndorf for a while, and I’ve always wanted to do a simple deli food with lots of fresh pasta, and the classic sandwiches which seem to be on everyone’s hit list these days. We were supposed to be in the building earlier but took longer to get going, so it’s exciting to finally open”
The deli, housed in an 1866 heritage-listed building with a seamless connection to a modern section, exudes a welcoming atmosphere. With white tiles, orange grout, green cabinetry, and captivating artwork by Eliza Koch adorning the walls, the space blends old-world charm with a contemporary twist.

“Ernest Delicatessen is housed in a cool old stone building with an archway that connects to a new building,” James says.
The charming establishment recently obtained a liquor license, allowing people to enjoy a bottle of wine alongside their delectable pasta and cured meats.
“There’s no delis in the Adelaide Hills and specifically Hahndorf, so it’s great to bring this to the communities. We would love to keep the locals entertained, and from living up here, we knew there was a gap in the market we could build towards,” James says. “We’re trying to have a little bit of fun and do something for the locals.”

Ernest Delicatessen prides itself on supporting local producers, showcasing a remarkable wine list featuring regional selections. “We try and go local; we’ve got Ninos down in Campbelltown supplying meats and obviously local wine,” James says.
The highlight of Ernest Delicatessen is its in-house pasta-making expertise.
“We’re making our pasta all in-house; I have a history of making fresh pasta. We’re going to keep things simple.” Dishes like the blue swimmer crab with tagliatelle, infused with Ambleside Gin, have already become a crowd favourite.

“We’ve been open for about 4 weeks now, and it’s all about locals, pasta, sandwiches and wine. Having worked in the industry, I know a lot of them and want people to know about them. It will be a lovely casual place people can enjoy in any shape they want. We will mould around them,” James says.
