NOW OPEN: Vibrant café by day and chic wine bar by night “Hey Juj” hits McLaren Vale

Hey Juj has launched its vibrant cafe by day and a wine bar by night on McLaren Vale’s main street.

McLaren Vale, known for its world-class wines and stunning landscapes, has welcomed a new eatery that promises to be the heart of the community.

Hey Juj, the brainchild of 22-year-old local Elliott Brown, has taken the McLaren Vale main street by storm. With its unique concept of a café by day and a wine bar by night, Hey Juj aims to offer something for everyone.

Elliott’s vision for Hey Juj is to celebrate the world-class food and wine that McLaren Vale is famous for, and he plans to deliver it in a modern, inviting space with groovy interiors that make you feel right at home.

The helm of Hey Juj’s kitchen will be steered by Head Chef Kellie-Jayne Grech, previously of Shobosho and Maxwell Wines, ensuring a diverse and delicious menu. From breakfast bao buns to acai bowls, poké bowls, and its signature ‘sando of the day,’ the café promises to cater to every palate.

As the day transitions into night, Hey Juj transforms into a wine bar, offering patrons a chance to enjoy a selection of globally acclaimed wines, beers, and spirits from the region, alongside international gems from France and beyond. The wine bar experience is complemented by a tapas menu that promises to elevate your evening.

What makes Hey Juj even more special is its personal connection to McLaren Vale. Elliott’s journey in hospitality began at the tender age of twelve in the very same building that now houses Hey Juj, which was previously known as the café, Blessed Cheese.

Over the years, he has honed his skills working at various esteemed establishments across the region, gaining valuable experience and expertise.

Elliott’s decision to return to McLaren Vale and open Hey Juj was largely driven by a heartfelt desire to realise his dream while his grandparents, who moved to McLaren Vale in 1980, can witness it.

His grandmother, affectionately known as ‘Juj’ by her grandchildren, ran her own café on McLaren Vale Main Street in the late ’80s and early ’90s, which is now the renowned restaurant, Oscar’s. Her love for hospitality and dedication to family inspired Elliott to honour her by naming his new venue ‘Hey Juj.’

Beyond food and drinks, Hey Juj will also offer fresh flowers and local goods, in addition to having its own ‘bottle shop’ for those on the go. The venue will provide a versatile function space, including a private room and a charming leafy green courtyard adorned with fairy lights at the back.

“This venue is for everyone. Whether you’re a local or a tourist; whether you’re after a sit-down meal or take-away lunch; whether you’re in the mood for a fresh salad or homemade pastries; Or, whether you’re a coffee or French champagne enthusiast,” Elliot says.

“Come in for a coffee and light brekky before work, a sando for lunch, or a cheese plate and vino after work – or the lot. The venue has been designed to take patrons from day to night.”

In anticipation of the wine tour crowds, Hey Juj will also offer a bottomless brunch, allowing guests to kickstart their day with a few mimosas and a hearty meal.

The café has been open for business from 4 November, with the Wine Bar opening shortly on 1 December.
