The festive season is fast approaching and with the weather warming up, many families are taking part in a true Aussie tradition – the driving holiday.

Hitting the open road provides a sense great adventure, entertainment and happy memories, but unfortunately such holidays can also come with an added driving risk.

With a long history of safety leadership and supporting community road safety programs, Holden is doing its bit to support safe driving this holiday season.

Holden’s road safety experts have provided five top tips to motorists for staying safe on the roads these holidays:

1. Pull over and take breaks every couple of hours, even if you don’t feel sleepy. Grab a snack, get some fresh air, and stretch your legs by walking around. If you need to, pull over take a quick power nap.

2. If you can, share the driving responsibilities with someone else. This will allow you to keep an eye on each other while driving and also enable you to nap without losing time.

3. Don’t tailgate. Always allow at least two seconds or two to three car lengths between your vehicle and the one in front. This should double in wet conditions. Remember the faster you’re travelling, the more time and distance you will need to stop your vehicle if something unexpected happens.

4. Always service your vehicle regularly and have it checked by a qualified technician – Holden capped-price servicing means regular services won’t hold any unexpected costs. A well-looked after vehicle is a safe vehicle. Before a long trip you should also check that tyres are at the correct pressure and all fluids are at their proper levels.

5. If you do have to pull over, move your vehicle off the road. Never park on the shoulder or in the breakdown lane for any reason except an emergency.

Holden’s Executive Director – Corporate Affairs, George Svigos, said that the company always puts safety as a priority. “Since establishing Australia’s first vehicle safety laboratory and crash testing program over 40 years ago, Holden has forged a reputation for innovation and leadership in automotive safety” Mr Svigos said.

“All our vehicles boast an extensive list of active and passive safety features and are demonstrated high performers in crash tests. Our safety focus ranges from reliable and accurate vehicle ride and handling to more high-tech features like our acclaimed ‘Head-up display’.”

“Holden also goes beyond just producing safe vehicles, supporting safety programs such as Buckle Up Kids, Women on Wheels and Australasian Road Rescue Organisation (ARRO).”

Since 2001, Holden has supported the ‘Buckle Up Kids’ program to promote the correct use of infant capsules and child restraints in vehicles. Up to 70 percent of child restraints aren’t fitted or used properly, but Holden is helping reduce this statistic by offering a free fitting service to owners of all vehicles.

Holden is also a founding member of the National Road Safety Partnership Program Australia, which aims to help Australian businesses and organisations develop a positive road safety culture and use their influence to enhance road safety nationally.

For 15 years, Holden has supported the Australasian Road Rescue Organisation (ARRO) in its annual road rescue training event, donating more than 1000 vehicles to ensure emergency services personnel who attend motor vehicle crashes and save lives each day continue to update their skills on some of the most recent models out on the road.

Holden also partners with several Australian universities to conduct research into new technology and the safety strategies of the future.
