Fleurieu Peninsula butcher wins best beef burger in SA

This victory is particularly sweet for the butcher behind the masterpiece, Deryck De Kruyf, especially after enduring a challenging year for the business.

Prominent local contender, Compass Meats, has just clinched the prestigious title of “Best Beef Burger in the State.”

The award was given at the AMIC South Australia Awards Dinner, which was held to honour and celebrate the industry’s finest. The event saw the crowning of the state’s Sausage Kings, Best Butchers Burger Winners, and the much-anticipated Apprentice of the Year.

This victory is particularly sweet for the butcher behind the masterpiece, Deryck De Kruyf, especially after enduring a challenging year for the business.

“It’s a cheese and jalapeño burger, using quality, local ingredients. Nothing too complex, just a simple, tasty burger.”

And the response has been huge.

“We’ve tripled the amount of burgers we’re selling in a week, which is awesome.”

The past year has been a rollercoaster for Compass Meats. The establishment, along with two neighboring businesses, faced a devastating blow when they were engulfed in flames in a fire that authorities initially deemed suspicious.

However, showcasing resilience and determination, Compass Meats has made a commendable comeback, now operating from a building adjacent to the vacant plot where their original shop once stood.

“We were hoping to enter the competition last year, but with the shop burning down, it didn’t happen. After the year we’ve had we are so stoked with this recognition.”

“We had so many people offer to help out. It was amazing.”

“I’m finally back on my feet.”

With momentum on his side, Deryck is gearing up for a trip to Melbourne at the end of this month, eyeing potential national awards. Moreover, his now-famous beef burger is set to compete for the title of “Best Beef Burger in Australia” in the coming month.
