Sydney’s Domestic Airport is currently facing significant disruptions, with nearly 100 flights affected due to strong winds.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Damaging Winds Expected: The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned of winds that could reach speeds of up to 90km/h.
- Single-Runway Operations: Airservices Australia has indicated that single-runway operations might be implemented later in the day due to the strong westerly crosswinds. This move is primarily for the safety of the passengers.
- Flight Cancellations: Over 50 inbound and 40 outbound flights have been cancelled for the day, as per the airport’s website. Airlines are consolidating services in response to the weather conditions.
- Severe Weather Warnings: Apart from the disruptions at the airport, severe weather warnings have been issued for several parts of NSW, including the South Coast, Hunter, Illawarra, and the state’s central and southern ranges.
- State Emergency Service on Standby: The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is currently on high alert. They anticipate an increase in calls and incidents related to the strong winds and rainfall. However, they expect the winds to subside by midday on Thursday, though some areas in the far south-east might experience them till the early afternoon.
