Flinders COVID-19 vaccine hub fast-tracked

The COVID-19 vaccine rollout throughout South Australia will be undertaken in line with the Commonwealth Government’s Vaccine Roadmap.

The COVID-19 vaccination hub at the Flinders Medical Centre has been fast-tracked to open alongside the hub at the Royal Adelaide Hospital from next week.

Minister Wade said the fast-track, and the ability to roll out more vaccines quicker than expected, has been made possible by Federal Government advice that they were increasing the doses in the first month’s delivery schedule.

“We continue to make strong progress on our rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine and this puts us in great stead to embark on the state’s biggest ever logistical peacetime operation,” Minister Wade said.

“Given the scale and complexity of the operation in front of us, it is great news that we will have two hubs open and ready to start providing the vaccines as soon as they arrive into our state from next week.

“Key frontline health care workers, quarantine and border workers and residential aged care and disability staff throughout the state will be vaccinated by a network of hubs as part of Phase 1a of the rollout.”

The other vaccine hubs throughout South Australia will come on line as the program rolls out and will be at Lyell McEwin Hospital, the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Riverland General Hospital in Berri, Mount Gambier Hospital, Whyalla Hospital, Pt Pirie Hospital and Pt Augusta Hospital.

Chief Executive Officer of Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN), Professor Sue O’Neill said SALHN was well placed to support the initial phase of the state’s vaccination rollout.

“We have identified the Cancer Wellness Centre within the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer as a suitable location for the hub and I want to thank the Flinders Foundation for their continued support,” Professor O’Neill said.

“I am proud that SALHN can play this extremely important part in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
