The Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) bus interchange is set to be relocated nearby as part of a large-scale redevelopment of the hospital facilities. Announced on Thursday, the interchange that currently sits at the hospital’s main entrance will be moved to Flinders Drive, just 60 metres away. This move will make way for a new hospital building at the existing site.
In the new arrangement, three revamped bus stops will be installed along Flinders Drive. Two of these will be positioned on the eastern side, adjacent to the hospital, and one on the western side. The upgraded bus stops are expected to be operational later this year, with the third anticipated to open concurrently with the new hospital facility.
To ensure safe and efficient movement for passengers, two new pedestrian crossings will be formed across Flinders Drive. These new inclusions aim to facilitate easy access between the bus stops and the hospital.
This redevelopment will also involve significant changes to the bus network. Several bus routes, including those on Main South Road, South Road, and Goodwood Road, that serve the Flinders Precinct will be rerouted. These adjustments are designed to enhance access and connectivity throughout the local transport network. Notably, early morning and late-night trips will be added to the schedules, specifically on routes 720 and 733, in response to community needs.
Passengers can expect these transport service changes to take effect from Sunday, 25 August 2024. Until the new facilities are ready, the current interchange will remain in use. During this transition period, all affected commuters are advised to consult www.adelaidemetro.com.au to access updated information, and use the Adelaide Metro journey planner for trip planning.
The FMC serves as a crucial hub for bus routes linking the outer southern suburbs and the city. Daily, approximately 500 buses and nearly 1000 passengers use this interchange.
Flyers with details about the new bus timetables will be distributed to travellers using the interchange. Additionally, new signage will be installed at key bus stops to help guide commuters.
