Flying Fish Café in Port Elliot is making waves once again with a fresh vision for its future, unveiling a second proposal in just a few years to reimagine the much-loved seaside venue.
Perched right on the edge of Horseshoe Bay, the plans promise a stunning new look that embraces the café’s breathtaking coastal setting while keeping its welcoming, community spirit at the heart of the transformation.
Rhiannon Noble, Group Business Development Manager, says the vision behind the renovation is all about creating a deeper connection between the café, the food and the incredible landscape just outside the windows.
“Our design team has and continues to work on ensuring the café feels deeply connected to its location,” says Rhiannon.
“By opening up more lines of sight to the water, increasing natural light, and introducing materials and textures that reflect the bay, such as stone, timber and soft coastal tones, we are strengthening the link between the food on the plate and the landscape that inspires it.”
“Diners will feel more immersed in the Horseshoe Bay experience, whether enjoying freshly caught seafood or a relaxed coffee by the waves.”
The upgrade will also shine a light on the café’s story and its deep connection to the bay’s history.
Inspired by the Flying Fish schooner, which famously came to rest here in the 1800s, the new design will feature thoughtful touches that honour the past while creating something fresh and contemporary.
“The updated design will weave subtle heritage references through art and storytelling,” Rhiannon explains.
“We see this as a way of connecting past and present, ensuring that visitors not only enjoy a meal but also feel connected to the bay, its history and the café’s namesake.”
At the heart of the project is a commitment to making the most of the café’s spectacular location while enhancing its warm and welcoming vibe.
Every element has been considered to create a space that feels seamless and relaxed, allowing the stunning beauty of Horseshoe Bay to remain the star of the experience.
“Our guiding principle is harmony,” Rhiannon says.
“We want the café to sit lightly in the landscape, complementing rather than competing with the natural beauty of Horseshoe Bay. That means creating welcoming, functional spaces that flow for both diners and staff, while always respecting the coastline’s character and ensuring the building remains adaptable to future coastal protection needs.”
Rhiannon says the team has worked hard to keep the venue’s soul firmly rooted in the community while elevating the overall experience.
“Locals are at the heart of the Flying Fish Café, so the renovation is designed to feel familiar, not foreign.”
