As the true cost of the South Australian bushfires is slowly realised, and the danger not yet passed, the public response to those affected by the disaster has been heartwarming, to say the least.

Fundraisers have been popping up everywhere, the public are rallying together to buy goods from Adelaide Hills and KI producers who have been hit by the fires, and countless volunteers are helping where they can, while donations of goods, services and time are rolling in.

To date, there have been 86 homes lost in the Cudlee Creek fires which swept through the Adelaide Hills on Friday December 20, and continue to burn now.

In response to the crisis, Foodland have generously offered to donate $500 vouchers to all families who have lost their homes in the bushfires.

Foodland have posted on their Facebook page:

Good Afternoon. No words can describe the devastation and sorrow the recent bushfires have had on our local communities. These fires have been close to home for Foodland, with our Adelaide Hills stores seeing this destruction up close. Foodland has held an emergency meeting as we can’t just sit here and watch this impact our community so close to Christmas. With thanks to our entire Foodland Family, we have made the decision to donate a $500 Foodland gift card to each family that has lost a home as a result of the bushfires. While $500 is not enough to bring back a home, we hope it can make Christmas a little bit more merry. An special thank you should go to the Klose’s Supermarkets. The Klose family have been custodians in the Adelaide Hills region for generations now. We are currently working out the fine details on how to distribute the cards through Klose’s Foodland and relevant agencies. Stay safe South Australia and once again, thank you to our brave CFS volunteers.

Today, it was announced that IGA would join Foodland in the donation effort, putting in another $500 for each family.

Foodland posted:

Good Morning. There is a genuine and admirable community spirit running through South Australia right now. There has been an overwhelming response to our post yesterday. Thank you for all the comments. I have two new pieces of information I would like to share:

1) Our friends at IGA have joined Foodland and will also be donating a $500 voucher to all that have lost a home. This will make it a $500 Foodland AND $500 IGA voucher. Thank you to IGA. While nothing can make up for the devastation these families have been put through, hopefully these vouchers can add a small smile in this time of need.

2) How can one collect these vouchers? The Bushfire Recovery Centre in Lobethal (based in the retirement village community centre – 71 Main Street, Lobethal) will be handing out the vouchers to those in need. We need to take a moment here and thank the dedicated team at the recovery centre. The support they are showing truly exemplifies community spirit. Thank you to everybody who is assisting.

This is what being community minded is all about. To see all of us stand by one another in times of need is what gives us Hope. Courage. Pride. To those doing it tough, we are here with you.

Stay safe, South Australia.
