The eclectic mix of shows in a Fringe ensures an enormous variety for the punters. Through the sublime and the ridiculous; the hits and the misses; the old and the new; there’s something for every taste and a blessed opportunity to escape the humdrum of the usual fare to try something different.
Renegade Productions have embraced this challenge with a fresh new interpretation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Written, directed and designed by Joe Lui, it is dark and poetic, but tediously boring.
Paul Gabovac looks constipated as angst-ridden Dr Frankenstein, while Lily Newbury-Freeman just can’t be taken seriously as a white-clad ballerina that represents the creature.
Alexa Taylor and Mikala Westall play multiple roles, and do them well, but the humdrum pace of it all isn’t enough to satisfy.
The small stage is overcrowded, making the performances stilted and the entrances and exits awkward. Lui’s only great achievement here is to make the audience live Frankenstein’s decades of torment in an hour.
