Christmas has arrived early for Bowden locals and its neighbouring communities, as a free outdoor Cinema in the Park series sets up shop to delight families and movie buffs this summer. Organised by Renewal SA in collaboration with Plant 4 Bowden, this event is part of a series intended to bring a boost to the community’s central park.
The program kicked off last Friday with an early evening showing of the early 2000s classic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, starring Jim Carrey. Held in Bowden Park, the day set the scene for a festive family outing.
Following the inaugural event, three more cinema nights are scheduled for Fridays, January 30th, February 27th, and March 27th, with the movie titles to be chosen closer to each date. This initiative follows the success of a previous event that saw a full house for a screening of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial earlier in the year.
Renewal SA’s Executive Director of Sales and Corporate Affairs, Skye Bayne, shared, “Instead of huddling on the couch this Friday, come enjoy a warm summer night in the park with your local community.

“The atmosphere at outdoor cinema events at Bowden is electric,” said Skye. “All you need is a picnic rug or some deck chairs, grab a bite from one of Plant 4’s fantastic eateries, pick up some popcorn and enjoy a family-friendly night.”
The movies will be displayed on a giant 7.5m inflatable cinema screen strategically placed on the northern edge of Bowden Park, with the audience facing south towards Plant 4. This setup is managed by the Adelaide Outdoor Cinema, ensuring a high-quality viewing experience for all attendees.
Jonathon Kaitatzis, owner of Plant 4, shared that the use of the park for such events encourages a sense of togetherness that is quite literally priceless. “It offers families a free, fun night out that doesn’t stretch the budget, especially important at this time of year.” He is confident that the screenings will be particularly popular and will help to set a summer vibe, benefiting the local traders and eateries of Plant 3 and Plant 4 by increasing foot traffic and highlighting the area’s vibrant commercial offerings. “Screenings like The Grinch create a warm, festive atmosphere in the precinct, and they make a noticeable difference for our Plant 3 and Plant 4 eateries and traders by boosting foot traffic and showcasing our vibrant local businesses.
“We’re thrilled to be part of an initiative that supports small businesses while spreading a bit of Christmas cheer,” he added. Importantly, no bookings are required for these outdoor cinema events. Attendees are simply encouraged to arrive early to find a good spot before the films begin.
