South Australian pre-loved fashion favourite French Laundry is hosting an exclusive Slow Fashion September styling event in collaboration with editorial stylist, upcycling designer and op shop enthusiast Lucia Zabala.
Happening on Thursday the 14th of September from 7-9 pm, guests will spend the evening with French Laundry owner and operator Mia Cresciteli and Colombian-born Lucia, who’ll both be sharing their tips on how to repurpose new to preloved pieces, how to upcycle what’s already in your wardrobe, as well as sharing the evolution of personal style and how to discover your own.
Mia is excited to be offering her customers such an exclusive experience whilst giving them the opportunity to learn from such a talented stylist.
‘Lucia has been a customer of mine for a while now, and we connected over our love for thrifting and upcycling fashion,’ says Mia. ‘We began a collaboration, where I give her pieces that may be damaged or unfit to sell at French Laundry, and she repurposes them for her own business, Lapetired—it’s been amazing.’
More than a standard rent-a-rack, French Laundry first opened its doors in a pop-up style store in March of 2022 before relocating to its permanent location in Gray Street in the CBD. The store is designed to make the pre-loved shopping experience more desirable than purchasing new by providing bespoke fashion and tailored service in its unique layout.
‘I offer a resale service, but everything is curated,’ says Mia. ‘People bring in their clothes for a 3-week period, and I take care of everything for a small service fee and commission. When people come into the space, they don’t need to rummage through a rack to find quality pieces—everything has been laid out by style and colour to make the experience much easier and enjoyable.’
Throughout the event, Lucia will be focusing on the benefits of upcycling and repurposing fashion, not just for your own wardrobe but in the sense of sustainability. ‘Lucia has only been in Adelaide for 18 months, and I wanted to give her a platform to share her story from being a big editorial stylist in Colombia to her transition into repurposing fashion since arriving in Australia,’ says Mia.
‘She’s all about telling the story of clothing—when she repurposes a piece, she leaves the previous brand labels on there, no matter how many there are, because it shows the history of the garment—it’s a very unique approach which I love.’
Mia is also looking forward to sharing Lucia’s work with her guests during this event too.
‘Lucia makes an amazing denim blouse, which will be featured on the night, and a collection will also be available to purchase,’ says Mia. ‘I love supporting women, so I’ll be stocking Lucia’s pieces at French Laundry because they’re in line with our ethos, and we share a passion for keeping fashion out of landfill.’
The event is for a small, intimate group, with tickets available now through Eventbrite.
‘We’ll have French martinis and french fries on the night, and it will be a nice group with a real community, “chilled vibe” spirit, with likeminded individuals who share a passion for fashion, coming together to connect and discover the beauty of thrifting and upcycling. I’ve done a lot of events before, but I’m really excited to host this one as it will be very educational and invites people to look at thrifting differently.’
