French restaurant Le Pas Sage gets an Autumn glow up

When we say ‘French restaurant’, do you think escargots and crème brûlée? Le Pas Sage is setting out to change your perspective.

When we say “French restaurant,” do you think escargots and crème brûlée? Le Pas Sage is setting out to change your perspective.

Aided by a sophisticated new spin on their two-year-old brand, it’s a new chapter for the contemporary French restaurant. You can expect a thoughtful take on modern French food and dining culture, co-owner Charlotte tells us.

Owners Vlad and Charlotte, partners in business and in life, are passionate about bringing a modern slice of France to SA. Their seasonal menus put a contemporary spin on traditional French dishes, offering a fresh perspective that goes beyond the usual Parisian fare.

“We want to show people the kind of food and experiences you can find right now in France,” she said.

Charlotte, who comes from Marseille, explains that the cuisine there is different from what you’ll find at many French restaurants throughout Australia.

The cosy Hindmarsh Square restaurant has unveiled a fresh rebrand, embracing the “bistronomic” dining style Le Pas Sage has been bringing to Adelaide since its inception.

Bistronomy refers to a style of dining that falls somewhere between a bistro and a restaurant. Charlotte explains that the way French eateries refer to themselves (bistro, restaurant, brasserie, auberge) tells diners exactly what to expect, and that’s something that isn’t as common in Australia.

By branding itself as offering bistronomic service, Le Pas Sage is bringing, as Charlotte puts it, “fancy service, but a laidback environment, lively with discussion.”

It was clear they were onto something new as soon as they opened. As part of their initial menu, Le Pas Sage introduced a mouthwatering Burger Croissant— a savoury masterpiece with a juicy beef patty, melted cheese, and fresh salad, all sandwiched between a freshly baked, flaky croissant bun. Now, they’re moving into a new era.

The rebrand brings luxe new exterior signage and a refreshed kitchen, making it possible to deliver the dining experience Charlotte and Vlad have dreamed of since opening.

“The kitchen is very, very small, so we’re making some changes to make the most of the space,” Charlotte said.

“We have a crazy good chef who totally changes the rules of what people expect,” she continued.

“Jeremy is a magician. He does magical things in the kitchen,” she added with a laugh.

Speaking of the kitchen, the menu is about to receive a seasonal refresh, along with its lush autumn glow-up. The new menu has yet to be unveiled, but favourites like confit de canard and beef fillet will remain, served with seasonal garnishes and house-made sauces.

The restaurant lets the food be the star of the show, but it’s complemented by a beautifully curated and constantly changing array of wines and cocktails. Like the food menu, the drinks list is getting a switch-up too. One thing’s for sure: the full wine list will feature only premium imported French wines.

“Everything on the drinks list pairs perfectly with something on the food menu,” Charlotte said.

What about the name? “Le Pas Sage” roughly translates to “the not wise.” But there’s nothing “not wise” about this. Really, it means “naughty and rebellious,” which fits with the sleek new embellishment on the restaurant’s exterior.

Le Pas Sage is stepping into a new chapter—with a refreshed space, a reimagined menu, and the same bold approach to modern French dining. Book a table to see what bistronomy looks like in Adelaide.
