Wands at the ready, Adelaide! This Fringe season, the wizarding world is getting a wickedly funny Fringe makeover, and it’s one you won’t want to miss.
Barry Potter and the Magic of Wizardry is back at the Adelaide Fringe after a sold-out month-long run at the Edinburgh Fringe, and it’s bringing some sorcery, sharp humour and seriously impressive prestidigitation along for the ride.
Billed as the world’s only Harry Potter parody magic show, this high-energy satire for the whole family comes from character comedian and magician Tim Motley (USA/Australia), a Fringe favourite best known for his award-winning, film-noir inspired Dirk Darrow series. While Dirk Darrow leans into smoky detective spoofs, Barry Potter trades trench coats for robes and dives into a certain wizarding universe.
The show follows Barry Potter, a fictional dark wizard hunter and all-around magical legend, who takes to the stage for an autobiographical storytelling spectacular, recounting his glory days battling the forces of darkness. There is everything from messenger owls and robed wizards to flying broomsticks and a whole lot of tongue-in-cheek chaos that is sure to keep you entertained.
The show playfully riffs off the Harry Potter series, but no prior knowledge of books or films is required. You don’t need to know your Horcrux from your Hippogriff to be swept up in the fun, as the magic stands on its own, wrapped in a familiar fantasy setting that makes it accessible for kids, millennials and anyone who’s ever dreamt of receiving a letter by owl.
Tim is no stranger to the global stage. Originally from Philadelphia and now proudly based in Adelaide, he has performed professionally in 53 countries as a magician, comedian, mentalist, actor, improviser and radio host. Across his career, he’s created and toured 11 solo shows and three ensemble productions, including Dirk Darrow: Magic of Future Past and 2 Magic Rubies, 1 Private Eye.
Tim is a four-time winner of Adelaide Fringe’s Magic Award — including for Barry Potter in 2023 — and has also received 16 awards at other Fringe festivals. Barry Potter and the Magic of Wizardry is sure to bring big laughs, illusions and just enough mischief to keep things delightfully unpredictable.
