FRINGE: Comedy legends The Umbilical Brothers bring cult classic ‘Speedmouse’ back to Adelaide

The Umbilical Brothers return to Adelaide Fringe with their wildly inventive physical comedy hit Speedmouse for a strictly limited run.

They’ve taken the stage in more than 40 countries, won an array of major awards and left audiences across the globe giggling. Now, The Umbilical Brothers are bringing their most beloved show, Speedmouse, back to Adelaide (for the 25th anniversary) for a strictly limited run.

A true classic of Australian comedy, Speedmouse is live, loud and just as chaotic as you remember. Described by The Sydney Morning Herald as “Marcel Marceau on really good drugs”, the show is a fast-paced physical comedy adventure that plays with rewind, slow motion and frame-by-frame action like a human cartoon come to life.

Armed with nothing but handheld microphones and their wildly elastic bodies, Shane Dundas and David Collins conjure entire worlds out of thin air. There are no elaborate sets, no flashy props, just two performers bending time, space and logic right in front of you.

Speedmouse is a masterclass in physical comedy that proves just how far imagination (and impeccable comic timing) can go. This really is what the Umbilical Brothers are known and celebrated for. They’re bona fide international comedy icons, with two BAFTAs, an Emmy, the Critics’ Choice Award at the Edinburgh Fringe and a Helpmann Award for Best Comedy Performers under their belts. They’ve built a reputation for creating work that is wildly inventive and almost impossible to categorise.

Speedmouse originally inspired their award-winning children’s TV series The Upside Down Show, which went on to build a cult following of its own. The stage show also became a multi-platinum-selling DVD, and, on a more cheeky note, eventually a set of multi-platinum drink coasters.

In a festival season packed with big names and bold new ideas, Speedmouse stands tall as a proven crowd favourite. For a strictly limited run, the legends are back where they belong: on stage, microphones in hand, ready to mess with your mind.
