FRINGE: Kay Proudlove’s Dear Diary is a heartfelt comedy musical about nostalgia and growth

Kay Proudlove’s one-woman show, Dear Diary debuts at Holden Street Theatres for an endearing part comedy part musical.

Kay Proudlove’s one-woman show, Dear Diary, is set to make its Adelaide Fringe debut at Holden Street Theatres this festival season. Directed by Leland Kean, the production blends music and comedy to explore the trials of growing up.

Following a highly successful East Coast tour in 2024, Dear Diary brings Proudlove’s signature storytelling and musical talent to Adelaide audiences. The show revisits entries from her teenage diary, weaving them into a performance that touches on nostalgia, humour, and personal growth.

“I’m looking forward to sharing Dear Diary with Adelaide Fringe patrons and hearing their stories in return. Since its premiere in 2022, I’ve had time to sink into what the show means to me and can’t wait to put that on the stage,” Proudlove said.

The show takes audiences through formative moments from her youth, including first kisses, friendships, and early musical performances. Inspired by rediscovering her teenage journals, Proudlove uses song and storytelling to reflect on the past while confronting present-day realities.

“The inspiration for Dear Diary came from moving house and stumbling across the journals of my teenage years. The entries were heartbreaking, funny and vulnerable, which to me is a winning combination when it comes to writing songs and making art,” she said.

The show was developed with support from Merrigong Theatre Company’s Artist Development Program, with writer, performer, director, and producer Phil Spencer assisting to shape the narrative.

Merrigong Theatre Company’s Artistic Director and CEO, Simon Hinton said, “It’s great to see this show reach a national audience. It’s a real crowd-pleaser of a show that we are excited to take to a wider audience.”

The production offers a relatable look at the expectations of youth versus the realities of adulthood. You can expect a mix of humour and heartfelt reflection as Proudlove navigates memories and the lessons they bring.
