FRINGE: Maho Magic Bar brings its neon lights and Tokyo-style illusions back to Adelaide Fringe

Cult-favourite Maho Magic Bar is returning to Adelaide Fringe in 2026, promising cocktails, close-up illusion and high-energy Tokyo nightlife in The Garden.

The neon lights of Maho Magic are getting ready to flick back on in 2026, bringing all the cocktails, all the style and all the fun back to the Adelaide Fringe. The Maho Magic Bar is hard to miss. From its cult-favourite blend of jaw-dropping illusion, playful chaos and Tokyo-style nightlife, it’s back for another jam-packed year in The Garden of Unearthly Delights.

Since its debut, this immersive Japanese magic bar has built a devoted following, earning rave reviews and countless repeat visits from Fringe-goers over the years. Part show, part bar and part fever dream, Maho Magic Bar doesn’t just ask you to watch magic, it drops you right into the middle of it.

Created by immersive theatre company Broad Encounters, the experience recreates the intimate energy of Japan’s underground magic bars. Guests take a seat in a richly designed space, order a drink and prepare to question everything they think they know about sleight-of-hand. Here, there’s no distant stage or smoke-filled spectacle, with performances unfolding just centimetres away, turning close-up magic into something thrilling.

For the upcoming Fringe season, a fresh line-up of international superstars are arriving in Adelaide, each bringing their own eccentric style to the bar. Drawn from Japan’s competitive magic scene, the cast blends centuries-old traditions dating back to the Edo period with contemporary comedy and fashion.

Broad Encounters Creative Director Kirsten Siddle shared, “2026 will be our most magical Fringe to date. With a fresh crop of sleight-of-hand prodigies found in the tumultuous back streets of Japan’s famed nightlife districts, you couldn’t ask for a better night out in ‘Tokyo’ at Maho Magic Bar!”

Adding to the chaos is a world-class line-up of performers, including cult-favourite magicians, international award winners and a bartending mixologist who turns drink-making into a performance of its own. Cards vanish, objects transform, toys come to life and cocktails are crafted with the same sleight-of-hand precision as the illusions themselves.

Set within The Garden of Unearthly Delights, this experience is an ideal stop for a Fringe night that calls for something bold. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, Maho Magic Bar promises a night where disbelief is suspended, senses are heightened, and reality takes a back seat.
