Returning to Fringe for the second time, 80s baby: a kids disco, premiered at The Pocket, Stirling over the weekend. Presented by Amelia Ryan in a costume of neon Lycra and hot-pink legwarmers, she channelled the spirit of early years Madonna crossed with Cyndi Lauper for all those gals (and guys) who just wanna have fun.

Pitched at two to seven-year-olds, the small tent at The Pocket was the perfect sized venue for this sing-along, dance-along show. Chairs around the outside of the dance floor made the whole thing far more comfortable for parents in attendance and the kids had the dance floor all to themselves. On the low stage in front of the dancing toddlers (average age was about three) Amelia sang along to 80s classics and taught some essential dance moves.

The interactive nature of the show and the fact that Amelia led them through dances such as The Locomotion, Agadoo and Walk the Dinosaur, meant parents could sit back and let their littlies groove away. There were songs from Playschool, Peter Coomb and even an appearance by a friendly ghost. Most kids there seemed to have a great time, though there were some tears ‘n tantrums as you’d expect from the youngest of Fringe goers. As for my seven-year-old and four-year-old experts, their only complaint was they didn’t know some of the songs. While oldies like me vaguely remember the likes of Agadoo, no child of today has heard that old relic. It would have been far better if she’d included songs that are at least on the radio from time to time. However, any excuse to dress-up in sequins and glitter is also welcomed by my two so, on the whole, fun was had.

It’s only on for the first weekend of March so if you want to go, get your tickets quick or look out for it at next year’s Fringe.
