I’m not a fan of anything that makes me feel like I’d be challenged by finger-painting so by all rights I should give Adventure Rooms a bad rap.
Adventure Rooms, located directly across Rundle Mall from Rundle Plaza, is one of two ongoing outfits offering escape room challenges in Adelaide. These are mental games, not physical, where participants have an hour to solve puzzles to escape the room.
There’s three themed rooms regularly on offer at Adventure Rooms, although only two of them for the Adelaide Fringe. Escaping from handcuffs in The Mad Scientist room, this punter and Co set about racing against the clock to find clues and decipher puzzles to release padlocks, find keys, open doors and discover the mysteries of the laboratory.
There’s no time to sit back and think about it. Everyone is in action while tense music adds a theatrical atmosphere to the proceedings and an ominous clock counts down your time. Only the observant will succeed because some clues are best hidden right in front of you and when you think you’ve made it, another surprise awaits.
Adventure Rooms have become popular around the world with the Adelaide franchise being the first in Australia. The adventures change approximately annually, with a Gaol Break room added only last week. Groups can compete across the one adventure or work together as a team. The more heads solving the puzzles, the higher chance of success you’ll have.
What’s inside each room is a mystery until the door shuts behind you. Exposing any details of what to do would detract from the fun of working it out yourself. There’s only a 30% success rate though so, if you’re like me, be prepared to pull out those finger paints next time you’re feeling adventurous.
