Fringe Review: Best of the Edinburgh Fest

Hand-picked from the Edinburgh Fringe, The Best of the Fest brings together three world class comedians for a night of truly great entertainment.

Best of the Edinburgh Fest
4.5

Gut wrenchingly good comedy

Reviewed on February 16th at Sector 7, Garden of Unearthly Delights

The Garden of Unearthly Delights boasts that if you’re looking for a good Fringe show, just go there, because they’ve curated the best Fringe shows from around the world, and brought them all into one, convenient, booze-billed location. It’s hard logic to argue, and this year’s line up of acts is sensational. Part of the 2019 motley crew is a band of comedians hailing from the UK, who represent The Best of the Edinburgh Fest. The Edinburgh Fest in itself is magnet for fantastic shows, so when someone filters though all the rabble to find the best of the fest, you know it’s going to be a cracking line up. Then add it into the super filter of the Garden, who “only select brilliant shows”, you know you pretty much can’t go wrong.

From the first comedian’s opening line to the finale 60 minutes later, you’ll be laughing.

With two shows a night, it’s an easy one to fit around the rest of your Fringe schedule, dinner and drinks, and it will definitely be a highlight of your season.

You get three international, stand out comedians for the price of one. Best of the Edinburgh Fest stars Jimmy McGhie (UK), Danny O’Brien (IRE) and introduces one of the UK comedy circuits rising stars, Kelsey De Almeida (UK).

Jimmy kicks things off and owns the stage. His ability to hold the audience’s attention and engagement is impressive, and his years of experience shine through with slick transitions from topic to topic. He knows how to make the crowd love him and he works it well. With subjects loosely based around Millennial vs Gen Y, he manages not to alienate anyone, instead endearing him to them with his witty insights on today’s culture. And he has the crowd nodding along, as he nails every single joke.

Kelsey is a pleasure to watch on stage. His quiet demeanour matches well with his style of humour, and his personal insights and his delivery of his jokes, work well together. He also works well alongside Jimmy and Danny to break up their on-stage force, which as a trio could be overwhelming. While he’s a relative newcomer, Kelsey has earned his spot on this tour, and I look forward to seeing his career flourish.

Danny is everything you could want from an Irish comedian. His rambunctious humous has everyone laughing along with him, even if a word or two escapes you due to his thick accent. He’s dirty, a born story-teller, and knows how to get the crowd roaring with laughter. His ability to bring his Australian experiences and observations in to his act were also very warmly welcomed by the audience.

Leave your parents at home, and get your tickets. This is the best comedy I’ve seen in years.
