Fringe Review: California Crooners Club with Hugh Sheridan

This new show by Hugh Sheridan and friends is one of the highlights of the Fringe 2016.

Opening in the Harry Potteresque Mortlock Chamber, this new show by Hugh Sheridan and friends is one of the highlights of the Fringe 2016. All three of these performers are good enough to stand alone, but together they are special. Hugh Sheridan is well known to Adelaide audiences and he has teamed with two other performers, Emile Welman (originally from South Africa) and Gabe Roland (from Kansas City). All three currently reside in Los Angles where they developed this concert, but they are performing it for the first time ever in Adelaide.

Some of the audience may have expected more standards, but the varied and vital mix of old and new was just right. This high-energy performance contained a few standards, a reworking of music by other contemporary artists and some original material. The boys stepped up the pace with their newly released single Just A Little More, and followed it with a great version of a Justin Beiber song and borrowed other songs from various artists such as Sia, Sam Smith, and even the great Ray Charles! They had the audience swinging along with them.

Each gets a chance to shine between the banter with serenades to audience members and Hugh Bringing Sexy Back! The voices blend well with some beautiful harmonies, gentle ballads, upbeat jazz and even some great rap. The boys are backed by some excellent Adelaide musicians, who provide the support needed, with occasional keyboards by Gabe Roland (talented musician).

It was an entertaining way to spend a little over an hour in pleasant surroundings. Refreshments are available: a glass of wine a few nibbles and great music, what more could anyone want?
