Fringe Review: Fascinating Fifties

The band consists of six musicians and a singer and is the usual format for a production of this mix of music. Their set list includes many of the well-known songs of the 50’s era, a couple of Elvis numbers, Sinatra classics, with some Connie Francis and others thrown in.

Fedora’s Restaurant is a lovely venue for this type of show, very welcoming. The band consists of six musicians and a singer and is the usual format for a production of this mix of music. Their set list includes many of the well-known songs of the 50’s era, a couple of Elvis numbers, Sinatra classics, with some Connie Francis and others thrown in.

Jon Till on the electric piano, Ray Howlett on guitar, Carlie James on drums, and Kon Kotsiou playing the sax make a nicely rounded backing band for Sian Zimmer on vocals. Although the song selection was varied, I wonder if some of the songs were in the wrong key for the singer as she seemed to be uncomfortable in areas. The Latin numbers were well received by the audience as were any Elvis numbers. Generally, the band, though proficient, lacked polish but in a relaxed style that would appeal to many.

With interval the show lasted two hours, considerably more than 90 minutes! This was a pleasant evening but not really up to expectations.
