Fans of local indie band Juno flocked underground for the unique offering on Thursday, Get Intimate with Juno ++ Draw Your (S)words. The sold out audience was not deterred by the sweltering heat and humidity inside The Bluebell Room. Once all chairs were claimed they were perfectly content to sit cross-legged on the floor, awaiting the start of the show.
Thursday was the first live show for Juno in some time, as they have been focused on writing. The band comprises lead singer Gloria Jung, guitarist Lucie Vano, bassist Wallis Prophet, and violinist Ella Moeck. Juno used their one-night Fringe show to introduce new songs and new techniques, as Vano used her laptop to add a synth to the mix of instruments. Vano even indulged in some human beat box as intro to one song, to wild approval from the fans.
Juno performed with graceful ease songs both new and old, featuring their trademark melancholic lyrics and bittersweet harmonies. Opening with Tip of My Tongue, the soulful melodies of Moeck’s violin echoed around the venue and spilled through the open basement windows onto the sidewalk above. Other songs included Rest, Lungs, and Spring.
Prophet has been writing and performing poetry for a few years now, and also collaborates with her band mates. Juno exquisitely accompanied Prophet’s poetry during the song I’ll Accept, which closed their traditional set.
Those fans who returned after intermission were treated to poetry from members of Adelaide group Draw Your (S)words – Juno blending their music with spoken word. Poets included Jesse John Brand, Jason Marsiglia, Gemma Boyd, and Manal Younus.
Juno has achieved new heights through collaboration and experimentation. The talented quartet offered fans a captivating evening of melodies and emotions.
