Fringe Review: Greg Fleet: This is not a love song

A man wandering through his memories, trying in his own way to change the past but knowing the result will be the same. He makes excuses, he explains, but he knows that the past is past, the only thing that changes is the way we view it.

A man wandering through his memories, trying in his own way to change the past but knowing the result will be the same. He makes excuses, he explains, but he knows that the past is past, the only thing that changes is the way we view it. Greg Fleet plays the man and his memories are populated by two actors (uncredited) representing him and his love interest. Also on stage is a musician (also uncredited) playing the soundtrack of popular songs which accompanies these memories.

We watch as he remembers falling in love, the beginnings of a relationship, the tenderness and happiness, the good memories, the falling apart and why it happens. He needs to adjust the memory because in retrospect he knows it was his closed emotions and selfishness that killed the connection.

The intimate venue increases the feeling of being there and witnessing the attempts to recreate and modify the past. He sees through eyes of how it should have been/be. In the latter stages, when Fleet breaks convention and talks to her direct, she says ‘you were never that handsome’, calling out his desire to improve the past.

The songs begin with Daryl Braithwaite’s The Horses, an Aussie anthem, and bring in many favourites to reflect the many moods. The guitar playing is nice, a mood enhancer, the singing is a little raw but adds to the feel.

A little different, but despite his claims this is a love story, just not the conventional happy ending. Another good show to add to your list.
