From the moment Martha Lott strides onstage as the lights go up on Grounded, you know you’re in for the ride of a lifetime. Dressed in the unmistakeable jumpsuit of a USAF pilot she claims her space and your attention. Listen up; this is a story that needs to be told and you will listen.
The stage is open, a Naugahyde chair sits centre stage in front of a backdrop of soft grey clouds on acres of fabric. This is a story that takes you into the stratosphere, and Kate Prescott’s simple set provides the perfect environment for magic to happen in.
This show has received its fair share of superlatives and has given itself a reputation to live up to and, like good wine, a year on, this show has developed its finely nuanced, emotionally uplifting and totally devastating ride through the life of the extraordinary woman George Brant has created and Martha Lott, under the expert guidance of director Poppy Rowley, has brought into shimmering life. The stage is alive with energy that brings joy, fear, death and mayhem alive with such extraordinary truth you are left hanging on every word that falls from this woman’s mouth and are left in awe of the joys, challenges and terrors that bring this extraordinary drama to an earth shattering close.
I could go into the storyline, expand on the unique and versatile performance space, expand on the deft and provocative direction and spend another 10 pages looking at the world class performance given by Martha Lott.
But please don’t take any notice of my humble opinion. Go and see this incredible piece of theatre and laugh, cry and wonder as much as I did.
