Lucille Orr is a best selling author, founder of the Australian Women’s Executive Network and of, what is now, the Telstra Business Woman of the Year Award. She is a renown public speaker, mentor, successful business woman and is still working hard to inspire and motivate others. Her latest goal is to establish an Institute to set young people on the road to a successful career or their own business through the kinds of exploration, motivational encouragement and mentoring this workshop provides just a taste of.

The workshop is based around her 1994 book of the same name and participants get a copy to take home. Lucille speaks about her own journey in the business world, both as a female business owner and working in the corporate world. We discussed how the position of women in the workforce had changed, generally for the better over the years, as more women are in senior and executive positions.

Participants are asked to think back to their childhood and what they wanted to become or do when they grew up. For me it was always something to do with the written word – perhaps a librarian or running a bookshop. In fact, I became an academic with a particular interest in media and communications. Then we were asked had we achieved what we wanted and to think about what next – what was our next goal or project?

As we discussed what we really want to do and achieve, Ms Orr offered ongoing mentoring and assistance to assist towards those goals. She also spoke about the importance of building and maintaining networks which chimes in perfectly with asking for what you want as you need to know who to ask. The final exercise was to visualise and then write about, with a collection of coloured pens, what our ‘Perfect Day’ after having achieved our goal would look like.

Ms Orr’s enthusiasm to help others achieve their goals comes over strongly and I enjoyed the workshop. There was certainly plenty of food for thought and I look forward to reading the books I brought home.
