Fringe Review: Mark Trenwith, After Dark

Over the past few years, quirky comedian Mark Trenwith has become better known for his children’s entertainment; most recently the hysterically funny Mr Snot-Bottom’s Stinky Silly Show, which is also performing this Fringe for young kids. He’s no newcomer however. For the past ten years, Trenwith has become an award-winning comedian with both film and television credits to his name.

Exposing his more adult side, sometimes quite literally, Trenwith returns for his fifth adult stand up show, plying the audience with Fish Facts, game shows, dance routines and wacky observations, that are all laugh-out-loud absurdities.

He opens with reminiscences about his experiences as a children’s entertainer, fighting urges to play with a Buzz Lightyear toy, before moving on to an adamant attempt to prove himself dark and deadly. Trenwith masters the balance between high energy, absurdist humour, and accessible comedy that appeals to all ages.

The intimacy of the Rhino Room lets Trenwith interact spontaneously with his audience, which he does frequently without missing a beat. Bring something to fan yourself with, however. If Trenwith’s strip doesn’t heat things up, the crowded room will on a hot night.
