The best way to learn about our local history

Mavericks, Madness and Murder Most Foul is the best way to learn about some of the famous folk that lived in South Australia.

Best described as a living history tour, for three years in a row (2012-2014) the West Terrace Cemetery night tours have entered the South Australian Tourism Awards’ Hall of Fame. Although available all year round, it is a treat to attend at Fringe time, the testament being a sell out for the entire 2022 Fringe season already.

You need to dress appropriately, as there is walking involved and the night air cools downs quickly. At the time of this review, I was fortunate enough to have this experience on a perfect summer’s night. Please also bear in mind you will be standing/walking for over an hour.

Upon the commencement of the tour, everyone is given a lantern to hold. These lanterns have special lighting, are used as part of the audio set, and if you are one of the lucky ones (like me), yours will also become involved in the story. In this way it is a very engaging tour!

Another way the audience is engaged is when some of the deceased come to life. Treated with theatrical renditions of their personas, or a short skit by some of Adelaide’s finest local performers, the reality of who these political greats, heroes and killers were, don’t require just our pure imagination.

Although it can suit all audiences, if you live in South Australia, it adds another dimension to your experience as you will more than likely know some of these historical figures. Yes, that includes the Somerton Park man!
