Millicent Sarre is Opinionated. It’s also the title of her latest show. Adelaide audiences may already know of Millicent from her award-winning show Friendly Feminism For The Mild-Mannered. However, if Opinionated is anything to go by, Millicent has well and truly shed her mild manners in her quest for equal rights for all. Opinionated is fully unapologetic, broaching topics such as female pleasure, the wage gap, domestic violence, adult men ‘dating’ teenage girls, domestic labour, and more. Millicent delivers the message of intersectional feminism with her trademark sarcastic humour, clever songs, and a voice like crystal, clear and pure and oh so consistent.
Opinionated includes a host of new original songs, showing a development and further depth growing in Millicent’s already formidable songwriting skills. The lyrics are hard-hitting, the riffs catchy. We are even treated to an appearance and a song by ‘Kevin’, Millicent’s mansplaining alter ego, who sings about how his rights are now in danger now that he can no longer catcall women in the street…
The one thing in this show that didn’t quite land was the amount of ‘humble-bragging’ that was presented early on in the show. While I believe it was meant to come across as confident and refusing to downplay her achievements, it was presented in such a way that came across as condescending, especially for Australian audiences where our culture tends not to brag in this way. While I have no desire to minimise Millicent’s achievements, of which she is justifiably proud, an adjustment in how this is presented in the show might be in order.
Step into this show prepared for a laugh, a singalong, and an education in just how far we still have to go before we have true equal rights for all people.
