Stewart D’Arrietta and his band played to a very appreciative audience of Cohen fans who were delighted to hear Cohen’s music played live again. The band was well balanced and D’Arrietta looked and sounded enough like Cohen to carry off his songs.

Many of the favourites were covered; Bird on a Wire, Everybody Knows, Suzanne, So Long Marianne and more. A particularly fine version of Dance Me To The End Of Love and a tango version of First We Take Manhattan were greeted with enthusiasm. Ain’t No Cure for Love brought us back after interval and one of his later songs, I’m Your Man. They ended with Hallelujah, which with audience participation sounded beautiful.

Besides D’Arrietta on piano and vocals, we heard the clear voice of Emily Kelly singing parts and back up vocals. Marty Hailey was especially fine on lead guitar, occasional switching to acoustic or slide guitar and back up vocals. Victor Rounds played bass (and also helped on back up vocals, Kelvin Sugars was keeping the mood right on drums. Michael Kluger on piano accordion provided some colour on many of the songs that needed a little more.

A lovely way to revisit the music of this talented man.
