With Georgie Carroll’s autobiography, Off the Charts, being one of Glam Adelaide’s best reads for 2021, the follow up live show came with a lot of expectation. Carroll is a Registered Nurse and a stand-up comedian, using decades of caring for others as fodder for her fans.
Carroll’s style is to tell stories, not jokes. Some are centred around family, but most are the trials and tribulations of working in health care, so you know it’s going to get gross at times. Poo will always come into it, as will grumpy old patients and people with objects stuck in places they shouldn’t be. The stories can be riotously funny but they’re never disrespectful and that’s a key factor in her success. She can make you want to gag or guffaw, but never by shaming the person she’s talking about (well, unless they’re doctors, perhaps).
The banter keeps the laughs coming, even when she’s engaging directly with audience members – a ploy that can often slow down the pace of a show under less experienced hands. Carroll is affable and charming, and not afraid to tell it like it is. Her honesty, charisma, and apparent lack of shame all combine with her natural storytelling abilities to keep her popularity on the rise. And deservedly so.
There are always new stories to tell and popular old stories to regurgitate. Whichever tale is being woven, you can rest assured the laughter Georgie Carroll brings will continue to be off the charts.
