The doyen of Adelaide Arts, the one and only Peter Goers, returns to the stage with his one-man, unplugged celebration of all things entertainment titled ‘Actors, Drunks & Babies Never Hurt Themselves’. Bursting on stage in a dashing red silk Kimono and white scarf (yet without a signature ‘ciggy’ in hand), Goers takes us on a journey of humorous quips from his erstwhile days of treading the boards.

Billed as ‘A Nice Show Particularly For Old People’, it’s suited to anyone with an interest in our nation’s great artistic past, and is a solid tribute to the Golden era of entertainment. Goers is a great storyteller, and conveys anecdotes with such passion and nostalgia that you yearn for those days to once again return. We’re reminded of how things certainly ain’t what they used to be!

Names of legendary performers such as Frank Thring, Ethel Merman, Bette Davis, Marjory Irving, Toni Lamond, and Gladys Moncrieff are recounted with fondness, and in keeping them on our minds it is in effect ‘keeping them alive’, as Goers describes it.

Incredibly informative, funny, and at times a little risqué, there are also some sobering moments in Goers’ repertoire in which he shares some tragic moments of his own life. It’s the epitome of the theatre experience- comedy AND tragedy. Life is a cabaret old chum! It’s the good, the bad, and the ugly of entertainment through the eyes of one of our most renowned arts personalities.

Only an hour long, Actors, Drunks & Babies Never Hurt Themselves is well worth the look to not only understand the good auld days of theatre, but also to see Peter Goers’ on stage unleashing his great shtick! (Said the actress to the bishop!)
