Well-known South Australian radio personality Peter Goers puts on an amusing one-man show that details a humorous commentary on the culture of Adelaide combined with tales of his past experiences.

Goers discusses his unintended pranking of people in his neighbourhood, comedic tales of his experiences with marijuana, as well as his many amusing experiences in country towns around South Australia (Clare –watch out!).

His language is fantastically descriptive and brings his engaging stories to life allowing for older members of the audience to enjoyably reminisce about the past along with Goers. Unfortunately for younger audience members some of his references to celebrities and past Adelaide events or traditions will be lost.

For me, and probably other young people, it feels like you’re having dinner with your charmingly charismatic grandfather and he’s recounting hilarious tales for you from his past. Goers’ creates a warm, comfortable atmosphere for his audience which is quite different to most one-man stand-up shows where there is an obvious wall between the audience and the performer.

This warmth is also due to the smaller size of the theatre which reinforces a truly intimate atmosphere for the audience. The old, lovely church and simple set (a chair and a table) allow for Goers to have the audience’s complete attention. He is energetic and makes the most of the space, moving around the stage whilst vividly re-telling his uniquely Goers-like experiences.

Contrasting with his lighter anecdotes are more poignant themes such as the tragedy of slipping into dementia and personal losses of friends departed.

Being Goers, the show is unlikely to remain G-rated throughout and he doesn’t disappoint with his amusing exploration of M.A.M.I.L’s (Middle Aged Men In Lycra) and the unfortunate involvement of a cucumber (yes, it’s what you’re thinking).

Peter Goers is ‘Smoked Ham’ is an amusing experience that will leave you with a big grin and warm heart. If you’re keen to reminisce, or just hear about the many amusing situations Goers has gotten himself into, then this is the show for you.
