Pop the Bubble Man (Tim Eddie) is a Scottish “bubble model expert”, who puts on a great show for young ones, and those young at heart.

Held in the Le Petite Grande at Gluttony, the environment is cosy and upclose,  and kids are encouraged to get down front and interact, which many did. Pop gives mini-science lessons on the nature and composition of bubbles, and delights the audience with his many and varied bubble creations: there’s regular bubbles, bubbles made with hands, smoke-filled bubbles, giant bubbles and even bubbles within bubbles.

Extra special bubbles for the day include the UFO, the snowman, the caterpillar, and giant bubbles covering whole people. Pop regularly whips his various wands over the audience, dousing the first few rows in showers of various sized bubbles. He throws and catches bubbles, makes giant wobbly bubbles fly over your head and lets the kids play and interact. The resultant atmosphere is fun, lighthearted and full of laughter.

Despite some of the more ambitious tricks taking a while to come to fruition, Pop soldiered on and didn’t disappoint. Children in the audience raged in age from babies to pre-teens, and all seemed captivated throughout. My two dates were 18-months and four years respectively, and both expressed their delight at the show (the 18-month old through enthusiastic giggling and gesturing, and the four-year-old declaring it “fantastic!”)

One word of warning — it’s soapy and messy. Don’t wear anything that you’re not prepared to get covered in “bubble juice”, especially if you sit up front. This is a lovely show for children, especially the 2—7 year-olds (though this much older kid also had a blast). It’s good, clean educational fun for all.
