For two nights only, Adelaide Fringe audiences were treated to a one-hour solo set by singer-songwriter Rainee Blake, best known for playing the role of Alannah in the hit TV show Nashville. Featuring a bare stage with only Rainee and her acoustic and electric guitars (and a whiskey), the evening was intimate and thoroughly enjoyable.

Rainee’s songs are equally truthful and musical, showcasing her unique style that blends soul,  folk, jazz, and R&B. Many of her songs are autobiographical; like many songwriters, her songs are born from her own lived experiences. Listening to her songs is like going on a journey, not only through the stories she tells but also through the songs and great musicians that have influenced her. Traces of Roberta Flack, Sara Bareilles, and of course, Joni Mitchell, among others, are woven through her work.

When Rainee talks to the audience, it’s like chatting with a friend; she is casual and easygoing, with a slight touch of charming awkwardness. However, the moment she begins a song there is this sudden change into the performer. She is confident, filling the stage and the room with her passion and glorious voice.

Overall, this performance was a wonderful hour of music and stories delivered by a stunning songwriter and performer. Fans of Joni Mitchell, blues and soul, or fans of the Nashville TV series should definitely take advantage of any future opportunities to see Rainee Blake.
