Ross Noble – 2021 Comeback Special sees the comedian return to his stand-up roots after Covid-19’s lengthy interruption. It is also the first time he is performing within Gluttony, rather than a bricks and mortar theatre. Noble admits some hapless Fringe-goers will likely purchase tickets on a whim with no notion of his affable yet fragmented improv style. However, long-time fans of his will enjoy the intimate and relaxed venue.

As the show begins, a giant inflatable Ross Noble head and hands balloons to life on stage. You are now entering Noble’s mind. He greets the audience and immediately starts improvising – feeding off their energy and remarks, and occasionally the intruding vocals of neighbouring acts.

Due to the nature of his comedy, each night will be different. Each story inspires the next, all told with Noble’s unique brand of crude yet well-meaning humour. On Tuesday, Noble recounted with cheerful pride the time he lifted an overlarge beanbag through his attic hatch-door, after which accomplishment he considers himself a “God among men.” He spoke with the audience at length (and with at least partial sincerity) about finding “perfect eagle equilibrium.” He also explained that depending on the contents of the inner liquid, a spirit level could also be considered a “haunted ruler.”

By his own admission, Noble’s show is not remotely educational. Though he offers a cheerful escape from the daily dramas of our lives.
