Having been on the stand-up stage and telling jokes for nearly two decades, Rove McManus’ return is a polished, effortless and hilarious hour-long monologue.

Rove has come a long way since his early days of the stand-up circuit and Rove Live. Having taken the USA by storm, the Perth-born comedian has taken over Australia’s airwaves, returned to the stage-circuit and most importantly, become a father.

That’s Me Talking takes the audience on a grown-up journey of daddy lessons and life as a (sometimes) good husband. This speedily runs through a maze of tangents, from frying up placenta, to Minnie Mouse’s genitals, to Stephen Hawking’s dirty talk and adventures of a mangy old teddy bear.

It’s a smooth and well-co-ordinated show, however it’s when Rove is forced out of his routine by rogue moths or a shiny bald head in the front-row that’s beckoning for a kiss that he’s at his experienced best. Rather than the expected Game of Thrones references or Trump lines, Rove’s expert ability to relate and create genuine reactions reminds the opening-night audience of why he’s still one of Australia’s favourites.

Thank goodness McManus’s real and relevant humour is back on our stages. He is as endearing and entertaining as ever.
