“You know you got to go through hell, before you get to heaven” – Steve Miller.

At arguably one of the most serene and picturesque wineries in South Australia, Shingleback Wines – these words have never sung so true. Hearing this statement with such vigour, in an atmosphere that many NEED to experience, especially at our point in this strange existence; even more-so, bellowed so beautifully in a cloudless sky which myself and a capacity crowd underwent; it is heavenly.

Ten Years Gone is a recently developed band. Their adaptation of live music isn’t new, truthfully it has been told and excessively. But music, however, is timeless. Argue with this writer if you must, but a divine glass of Haycutters Salmon Rose and remembering the words of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust is a victory, undoubtedly and always.

Since the pandemic taught us how difficult life can be, we have been fortunate enough in SA to continue entertainment of this value, in ways that the world has become envious.

An event like this would be regarded as impossible; although and repeated, this scribe is transcribing about the nearly hopeless, but it is a reality. Live music? Dancing? Standing? Tick all those boxes with a glass of Fiano from Shingleback and their bioproject; “I been up, I been down” – ZZ Top.

The (mostly) sextet incredibly performed four separate sets over five hours and it was invigorating. The Flying Lizards Money was ironically inspiring in our time of uncertainty and The Rolling Stones Honky Tonk Woman had a cowbell drive that would inspire Brian Jones – these are just highlights of what transpired as an introduction.

Interrupting the hits with a quiz on rock ’n’ roll history between songs, the spirits were somehow elevated further, if one can believe that? “Funny” only exists with “Fun”. Neil Young, Cream, Five Man Electrical, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin boosted a delightful day. The night was still to come.

Thankfully the energy was bolstered by Iggy Pop’s Real Wild Child and carried on by Janis Joplin’s Piece Of My Heart – in all honesty, these tracks just welcomed the nightfall which is where the six-piece and audience remembered how astonishing the connection of music can be.

Without revealing an entire show, this author will reveal that a very enigmatic cover of KISS’s I Wanna Rock ’n’ Roll All Night closed an inconceivably alluring evening.
