Fringe Review: The Baroque

This solo performer presents his alter-ego Syphilis Von Hamstring encouraging much audience participation.

An hour of light-hearted slapstick nonsense that will make you smile.

Set nominally in the Baroque period, complete with music and appropriate props, provided by his director/producer, this solo performer presents his alter-ego Syphilis Von Hamstring encouraging much audience participation. His antics bring suitable responses from the crowd, with much egging on his part. Oliver Nilsson is  a great slapstick performer and he has a rubber face! His performance includes some business with wigs and flowers and sleight of hand silliness.

Members of the audience interact with Nilsson, as his love, her new escort (leading to a mock duel) and as his raven to deliver love letters. Yes, that is as ridiculous as it sounds, but that is the whole point. His exaggerated protestations and cries of woe are echoed by the onlookers (following his demands). There is nothing intellectual in this but that is its charm, it’s just fun!
