Fringe Review: The Ides of March

If you think you know what happened on 15th March 44BC, think again! With William Shakespeare and a friend looking on, things were much more complicated. This is a tale of time travel, treachery and a lot of fun.

With the two visitors from the 16th century, 40 senators and a couple of Roman policemen, the characters total 44 (or more, difficult to keep track) but the cast is only 4, supplemented by audience members willing to wield a dagger. These four people change characters and costumes with dizzy speed and the watchers try valiantly to keep up.

The premise is that the Bard is there to do research for his up-coming play on the assassination. He gets sprung and things deteriorate from there. Written by Kieran Bullock ( the creator of Elwood Country Club Productions) the production is totally extraneous, very tongue in cheek and well worth a visit. Writer Bullock is joined on stage by Jennifer B Ashley, James Rosier and Paul Brown, all of them clever actors with great timing. Ed Britton has designed and operated lighting that keeps up with the pace.

This is the sort of show that makes us look forward to Fringe time, so don’t mis your chance to have a good laugh!
