Fringe Review: The Racist Immigrants

Presented by Aditya Gautam
Reviewed 3rd March 2022

The Racist Immigrants has an excellent structure for a comedy show.

Although you don’t know which two comedians will be performing on the night, at least you know it is going to be either He Huang, Paul the Black, Delhi Buoy or Aditya Gautam. In addition, you are aware the humour will centre around racism, cultural assumptions, and the experiences of immigrants living in Australia.

Suitable for all types of audiences, the comics on the evening of attendance were Paul the Black and Aditya Gautam. It opened with Aditya Gautam, who told hilarious tales of life as an Indian man within his own family, as well as within Australia.

There is no official break in between comedians, as it only runs for 50 minutes. Being located at the Laugh Lounge, which has a nice intimate setting, you don’t miss out on much if you stop up to get an extra round of drinks in any case.

Next up was Paul the Black, who is Kenyan and equally funny. Both comedians make good use of the audience, have very different tales to tell, and the only prop is the microphone. The stage set up at the Laugh Lounge is a small stage, with a dimmed spotlight, and excellent sound quality (not always achievable in these bar-like atmospheres).

If you have never been to the Laugh Lounge, and want to watch a great show, The Racist Immigrants is ideal. The venue itself is conveniently located in Rundle Mall, and it has an excellent atmosphere. Before the performers start, you are greeted with vibing music, great service at the bar, and despite the small and cosy space, it feels spacious.
