Fringe Review: Wolf Creek: The Musical

Who knew a self-proclaimed “bad amateur underground horror musical” could turn into a killer comedy?

Based on the popular 2005 horror film, Wolf Creek, Demi Lardner and James McCann’s musical spoof tells the same story of three backpackers kidnapped and tortured in the Australian outback by a serial killer; but with its cheap set pieces, dubious costuming, and a cast of comedians, it never wanes in its pace or perverse song lyrics. There are more laughs per minute than most television sitcoms.

The self-effacing dialogue and over-the-top death scenes are reminiscent at times of “Let the Blood Run Free”, for those who remember that crazy comedian-driven comedy from the early 1990s, but there is surprisingly little blood in this stage production, with the ensemble relying on wit instead of gore to get their laughs.

Angus Hodge is particularly notable in a variety of minor roles, including that of a camp fire (yes, the actual camp fire!), but the main cast, which includes Lardner, are all a delight, as is McCann who accompanies the show on piano.

For a late night laugh, this one is hard to escape.
