From Broadway to Hollywood: A Tribute to George & Ira Gershwin – 2012 Adelaide Fringe

Presented by Pam Lawson
Reviewed Sunday 4th March 2012

What better way to spend a Sunday Afternoon than with the works of George and Ira Gershwin?

Pam Lawson shares her favourite Gershwin songs, backed by the 4 piece band of Tom Finlay on piano, John Callisto on double bass, Derek Pascoe on saxophone and Frank Fragomeni on drums.

Whist this is listed as a cabaret, Lawson admits that this is more of a music show, but she still manages to slip in a little history of the music into the show. Her performance shows her enjoyment of the pieces, dancing along to the musical interludes and connecting with the audience as she sings.

As with Lawson’s Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers: A Celebration in Song, reviewed last week, her jazz background suits this music, keeping the music nice and relaxed, pulling out some of the much recorded standards and a few lesser known works by the duo.

Whilst other shows have the pianist as musical director, leading the performance, it appears Lawson sets the feel for her music, deciding on the pace for each song and giving Finlay, who has also travelled with Lawson from Scotland, the beat she wants for most songs. Callisto, a local who is supporting Lawson for her all of her shows has settled in well with Lawson and Finlay, enjoys the music and gets the chance to show his skill with some great solos. Pascoe and Fragomeni have been bought in especially for the From Broadway to Hollywood: A Tribute to George and Ira Gershwin shows and they complete the group nicely.
