See roses in full bloom and over 25,000 sunflowers as Richard Hamilton’s “Summer of Fun” program continues

The winery’s “Summer of Fun” program dials up the best bits of the festive season with something for you and the whole family.

Summer in McLaren Vale already feels magical. Between the coastal breezes, rolling vineyards, and fine wine, the region is the ultimate spot to spend an afternoon that rolls into the evening. 45 minutes out of Adelaide, it’s just far enough to feel calm and tranquil, but close enough for an easy escape.

At the Richard Hamilton Wines Cellar Door, they’ve taken the summer feeling and dialled it up. Their “Summer of Fun” program brings together music, markets, flowers, food and exceptional wine (all the good things) into one long, warm stretch of celebrations.

“We are super excited by our upcoming Summer of events – there really is something for everyone with quite a diverse program,” says James Carman, Sales & Marketing Manager at Leconfield and Richard Hamilton Wines.

“Summer in McLaren Vale, particularly over the Christmas and New Year’s periods, really comes alive as people head to the coast and seek out their new favourite wine.”

Whether you’re a Richard Hamilton regular or simply chasing a beautiful spot to settle in for a summer afternoon with a refreshing glass of award-winning wine in hand, they’ve got you sorted. Below, we’ve broken down each part of the program so you can choose your perfect summer session.

Twilight Series | 28 Nov, 9 Jan, 23 Jan, 6 Feb, 20 Feb

The season begins with the return of the Twilight Series, now in its second year. Running from 5:30pm to 9pm, these Friday-evening sessions are a relaxed way to ease into the weekend with an epic lineup of local talent performing at the estate grounds.

Picture yourself on lush lawns, surrounded by bright blooms and vines, live acoustics, a glass of your favourite Richard Hamilton wine in hand, and golden-hour light spilling over the estate. It’s the kind of scene that nudges you straight into weekend mode.

Mid Coast artist Luka Bailey opens the program on 28 November, bringing warm folk-blues energy before more twilight sessions roll out across January and February.

Collective Christmas Markets | 6 December

On Saturday 6 December (11am–3pm), the estate welcomes the inaugural Collective Christmas Markets, bringing more than 40 local stalls to the cellar door grounds. Expect handmade clothing, local craft, skincare, pet-friendly treats, educational toys, sensory goodies and produce from small-batch makers.

There will be face painting, food trucks, coffee, and even an appearance by Father Christmas himself. It’s family-friendly (pets included) and the ideal place to tick off your Christmas list in one hit. The Richard Hamilton Cellar Door will also be open for a mid-shopping spree tipple or to pick up a bottle of two to accompany your Christmas day feast.

Syn at Sunset featuring cover band Velvet | 27 December

Remember that weird, blurry week between Christmas and New Year’s when you can’t remember what day it is or what you’re meant to be doing? At Richard Hamilton, they’ve turned it into a tradition.

Now in its 17th year, Syn at Sunset returns as the ultimate post-Christmas unwind for the whole family. From 4pm, it’s a laid-back, lawn-sprawling kind of night with wine, live tunes, delicious food and immaculate vineyard views that fit the post-Christmas-food-coma, pre-New-Year’s holiday haze. “It’s a great scene to recover from Christmas and Boxing Days and prepare for the new year,” says James Carman.

This year, Adelaide band Velvet, led by Kate Bussenschutt, will keep the summer spirit alive with dance-worthy covers spanning the ’80s to today. Picnic rugs, friends and festive energy are highly encouraged.

Rose Gardens in Bloom | Late Oct–Throughout Summer

Richard Hamilton’s 7000 roses – which are more than the International Rose Garden in the Botanic Gardens- is one of the most picturesque places in McLaren Vale to wander, sip and soak in the season. They’re just spectacular, turning the grounds into a vivid display of colour against the green vineyards and the Willunga escarpment and have become a go-to destination for locals and tourists.

The roses are currently in bloom and a second flush is expected in January.

Sunflower Spiral | Early–Mid January

If roses aren’t enough, the 25,000-strong sunflower spiral is expected to burst into bloom in early to mid January. Visitors are invited to wander through the field and immerse themselves in the bright sea of yellow blooms – and take some incredible photos while you’re there.

Not much says summer quite like sunflowers, and twenty-five thousand of them will turn the estate into a golden maze you’ll want to wander through again and again.

While the blooms and the jam-packed calendar are a major drawcard, they’re only part of what makes Richard Hamilton special. The Hamilton’s planted South Australia’s very first vines, starting a family winemaking legacy that continues today.

Nearly two centuries on, their legacy spans McLaren Vale and Coonawarra, producing award-winning wines under the Richard Hamilton, Leconfield and Syn labels. Whether you like crisp and aromatic, textured and white, bright and red, or bold and full-bodied, there’s a wine for every mood and every preference – they even have fortified options.

The Summer Program is the perfect invitation to lean into the season and immerse yourself in the full Richard Hamilton experience. Escape the city rush and take in the beauty of McLaren Vale, enjoy what makes South Australia so special, and settle in with a glass of something delicious with your loved ones.
