Sydney’s Hoyts flagship complex looked like a cross between an AvCon and the Academy Awards on Thursday night, as Trekkies and A-listers lined up to see the new Paramount Pictures addition to the Star Trek franchise, as well as catch a glimpse of some of the stars.
Glam Adelaide were in the thick of things, eager as anyone to catch the first public screening anywhere in the world alongside Director Justin Lin, of Fast And Furious fame, and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and John Cho.
Hoards of fans had lined up hours before the start time, happily standing in the miserable Sydney rain to line the red carpet. Some of the audience costumes were as good as those on the screen, and Star Trek fanatics were everywhere! Behind the press rope Glam stood next to a representative of Trekzone, Australia’s official Star Trek fan club. As any follower of the franchise knows, the fan culture is something all of the stars are taken aback by, with Quinto, Urban, Cho, Pine and Lin all stopping for a long chat with Trekzone and other journalists.
Despite the cast all still reeling from the sudden loss of fellow cast member, Anton Yelchin-Yelchin, who died in a freak accident only two weeks ago, the atmosphere was buzzing. It is clear that these guys all love working together, and love their trekkie fans posing for fan photos and taking their time with everyone in the crowd, even after a gruelling day of publicity commitments.
While we can’t tell you just yet what the film was like, we can tell you that the fan response was full of praise. Star Trek Beyond opens in Australia on July 21st. To follow the build up to the release of the film, follow Star Trek AU on Facebook.
